This week at the movies (3/10 - 3/16)

Danny DeVito stars as the memorable, curmudgeonly Lorax

Now in theaters:

* The Lorax: A fun and flashy movie with an environmentally conscious social message.  While the movie has a non-stop pace and sometimes gets lost in wacky chase scenes, the visuals are dazzling, and 3D (Tree-D) serves the world of Dr. Seuss quite well.  Danny DeVito as the Lorax and Betty White as Granny offer standout performances

* The Secret World of Arrietty: A reflective, visually stunning film that moves at its own pace yet touches the heart and delights with humor thanks to the comical voice stylings of Amy Poehler and Carol Burnett

*  If you are in an artsy mood, consider seeing the Oscar winner for Best Picture and Best Actor The Artist, an extremely charming and innovative black-and-white silent film about a Hollywood actor's struggle to transition to talkies

On DVD

* The Watcher in the Woods: A classic from the rare genre of family-friendly horror film from Disney, the movie is scary enough to give kids and grownups alike the creeps, but tame enough to be enjoyed by children as young as eight. Great slumber party pick

* Check out Hugo, a wonderful movie that is riveting with its dynamic camera skillfully and lovingly directed by Martin Scorsese. Winner of five Oscars

* The Black Stallion: This breathtaking classic children's film isn't fast-paced, but the story is engaging, the photography is gorgeous, and the scenes of the boy bonding with the horse on the remote island shores are beyond words

Beauty and the Beast: For a fun afternoon out with your little princess, this might be just the ticket

* Lady and the Tramp: This classic is sure to be a favorite for dog-lovers, and is worth seeing for the romantic scene in which the two star-crossed dogs share a plate of spaghetti
